Background: Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in dogs.
Objectives: To compare, throughout the period of follow-up of dogs that had not yet reached the primary endpoint, the
longitudinal effects of pimobendan versus benazepril hydrochloride treatment on quality-of-life (QoL) variables, concomitant
congestive heart failure (CHF) treatment, and other outcome variables in dogs suffering from CHF secondary to MMVD.
Animals: A total of 260 dogs in CHF because of MMVD.
Methods: A prospective single-blinded study with dogs randomized to receive pimobendan (0.4–0.6 mg/kg/day) or
benazepril hydrochloride (0.25–1.0 mg/kg/day). Differences in outcome variables and time to intensification of CHF treatment
were compared.
Results: A total of 124 dogs were randomized to pimobendan and 128 to benazepril. No difference was found between
groups in QoL variables during the trial. Time from inclusion to 1st intensification of CHF treatment was longer in the
pimobendan group (pimobendan 98 days, IQR 30–276 days versus benazepril 59 days, IQR 11–121 days; P = .0005).
Postinclusion, dogs in the pimobendan group had smaller heart size based on VHS score (P = .013) and left ventricular diastolic
(P = .035) and systolic (P = .0044) dimensions, higher body temperature (P = .030), serum sodium (P = .0027), and total protein
(P = .0003) concentrations, and packed cell volume (P = .030). Incidence of arrhythmias was similar in treatment groups.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Pimobendan versus benazepril resulted in similar QoL during the study, but conferred
increased time before intensification of CHF treatment. Pimobendan treatment resulted in smaller heart size, higher
body temperature, and less retention of free water.

Background: Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in
geriatric dogs despite conventional therapy.
Hypothesis: Pimobendan in addition to conventional therapy will extend time to sudden cardiac death, euthanasia for cardiac
reasons, or treatment failure when compared with conventional therapy plus benazepril in dogs with congestive heart
failure (CHF) attributable to MMVD.
Animals: Two hundred and sixty client-owned dogs in CHF caused by MMVD were recruited from 28 centers in Europe,
Canada, and Australia.
Methods: A prospective single-blinded study with dogs randomized to PO receive pimobendan (0.4–0.6 mg/kg/d) or benazepril
hydrochloride (0.25–1.0 mg/kg/d). The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiac death, euthanized for heart failure,
or treatment failure.
Results: Eight dogs were excluded from analysis. One hundred and twenty-four dogs were randomized to pimobendan and
128 to benazepril. One hundred and ninety dogs reached the primary endpoint; the median time was 188 days (267 days for
pimobendan, 140 days for benazepril hazard ratio 5 0.688, 95% confidence limits [CL] 5 0.516–0.916, P 5 .0099). The benefit
of pimobendan persisted after adjusting for all baseline variables. A longer time to reach the endpoint was also associated with
being a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, requiring a lower furosemide dose, and having a higher creatinine concentration. Increases
in several indicators of cardiac enlargement (left atrial to aortic root ratio, vertebral heart scale, and percentage increase
in left ventricular internal diameter in systole) were associated with a shorter time to endpoint, as was a worse tolerance for
exercise.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Pimobendan plus conventional therapy prolongs time to sudden death, euthanasia for
cardiac reasons, or treatment failure in dogs with CHF caused byMMVDcompared with benazepril plus conventional therapy.

An abdominal mass was incidentally detected in a 12-year-old, neutered female, crossed breed dog. Abdominal
ultrasonographic examination showed a well-delineated, irregular, heterogeneous mass that did not generate
any distal acoustic shadowing. Transcutaneous US-guided biopsy of the mass were nonconclusive but raised the
possibility of neoplasia. Surgery discovered a mass embedded in the omentum and a large quantity of surgical

Early detection of liver metastases may improve the prognosis for successful treatment in dogs with primary
tumors. Hepatobiliary-specific contrast agents have been shown to allow an increase in magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) detection of liver metastases in humans. The purpose of this prospective study was to test
the feasibility for using one of these agents, gadobenate dimeglumine, to detect liver metastases in dogs.
Ten consecutive dogs known to have a primary tumor were recruited for inclusion in the study. All dogs
were scanned using the same protocol that included a T2-weighted respiratory-triggered sequence, T1 VIBE,
diffusion-weighted imaging, and 3D-FLASH before and after dynamic injection of gadobenate dimeglumine
contrast medium. Delayed imaging was performed less than 30 min after injection and up to 60 min in two cases.
Histological analysis of liver lesions identified in delayed phases was performed for each case and confirmed
metastatic origin. In all cases, lesion number detected in hepatobiliary contrast-enhanced sequences was
statistically higher than in other sequences. Optimal lesion detection occurred with a 3D-FLASH sequence
acquired in the transverse plane and less than 30 min after injection. Findings indicated that gabobenate
dimeglumine enhanced MRI is a feasible technique for detecting liver metastases in dogs. C   2014 American

The magnetic resonance imaging features of a cauda equina paraganglioma in a 5-year-old dog are described.
Imaging revealed a well-defined, strongly contrast-enhancing mass invading the adjacent vertebral body and
infiltrating the intervertebral foramen bilaterally. Flow void, compatible with increased drainage veins around
the mass, and macroscopically visible neovessels in contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography, as
reported in numerous human studies, were not visible in this single case. The tumor recurred despite aggressive
surgery and radiotherapy. This neoplasm should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cauda equina
abnormalities in dogs. C   2013 American College of Veterinary Radiology.

Three dogs with presumptive cardiogenic pulmonary edema underwent a thoracic ultrasonographic examination.
Multiple ring-down artifacts involving both sides of the thorax emanating from the pleural–lung interface

Twinkling artifact is a recently described color-Doppler phenomenon that has not been studied in the veterinary
field. Our purpose was to assess the grade of the artifact in vitro with varying urolith compositions, and to
evaluate its potential role in clinical practice. Five canine and feline uroliths types of 100% mineral composition
were studied in vitro with color-Doppler sonography, and a prospective study was performed in 41 patients with
renal, bladder, gallbladder, or digestive focal hyperechogenicities. The images were analyzed for the presence
and the grade of the artifact. Phantom study demonstrated the constant occurrence of the artifact regardless of
the mineral composition of uroliths. Mottled and rough surfaced stones produced higher grades of twinkling
artifact. High-grade, color-twinkling artifact generated by stones occured frequently in vivo. Bladder crystalluria
was more frequently detected by artifact visualization than sample urinalysis performed by cystocentesis.
In veterinary medicine, twinkling artifact may thus be considered an additional sonographic feature of
urinary stones, and can lead to a more appropriate management of patients presenting gray-scale sonographic
focal hyperechogenicities. Veterinary Radiology & Ultrasound, Vol. 47, No. 4, 2006, pp 384–390.
Key words: artifact, canine, Doppler studies, feline, ultrasound (US).

A 7-year-old, West Highland White Terrier had a 5-month history of diarrhea, dysorexia, and weight loss.
Sonographically, there was a focal area of intestinal thickening with loss of layering. A neoplastic or severe
inflammatory condition was suspected and intestinal lymphangiectasia was diagnosed histopathologically. This
patient seems to be the first description of intestinal lymphangiectasia appearing as an intestinal mass.
